Definition

Performs/oversees the operation, maintenance, and new equipment installations at the Iowa PBS transmission facilities, applying advanced knowledge and experience of transmitters and RF transmission systems operating parameters, system testing, and their complex repairs; performs related work as required.

Work Examples

  • Performs all duties in the Transmitter Engineer Senior.

  • Trains and participates in the work of other engineers/technical personnel engaged in the operation, repair, and maintenance of transmitting, electronic, and electrical equipment and associated software related to the production and broadcasting of educational radio/television programs.

  • Advises and collaborates with other engineers/technical personnel involved in testing and repairing of transmitter/translator equipment and mentors less experienced engineers in the repair of the more complex equipment applicable to the latter’s assigned work areas.

  • Performs/verifies diagnosis, testing, maintenance, and preventive maintenance of high-power transmitters, low-power transmitters, translators, and related electronic equipment used in the broadcasting of radio/television programs.

  • Performs/verifies maintenance and repair of more complex building and broadcast equipment mechanicals (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, cooling system, electrical/pneumatic controls, pumps, blowers, motors, etc.).

  • Researches, plans, and implements equipment and systems for transmitter/translator facilities.

  • Provides field assistance to other Iowa PBS transmitter engineers.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Six years of full-time work experience in operating, maintaining, or repairing complex electronic equipment in a radio or television transmitter/translator or network studio.

  2. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in electronic technology, broadcast engineering technology, or a closely-related field, and experience equal to four years of full-time work in operating, maintaining, or repairing complex electronic equipment in a radio or television transmitter/translator or network studio.

  3. All of the following (a and b):

    1. Two years of full-time work experience inoperating, maintaining, or repairing complex electronic equipment in a radio or television transmitter/translator or network studio; and

    2. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in electronic technology, broadcast engineering technology, or a closely-related field equals one year of full-time experience.

  4. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in electronic technology, broadcast engineering technology, or a closely-related field, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in operating, maintaining, or repairing complex electronic equipment.

  5. All of the following (a and b):

    1. Five years of full-time work experience inoperating, maintaining, or repairing complex electronic equipment in a radio or television transmitter/translator or network studio; and

    2. Possession of a certificate in electronic technology, broadcast engineering technology, or a closely-related field from a recognized technical, military, business, college, or university certificate program.

  6. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transmitter Engineer Senior at Iowa PBS.
