The State of Iowa offers State retirees the following health and dental insurance options:
Iowa Choice
Iowa Choice is an HMO and uses Wellmark’s Blue Access' network. You have access to doctors and hospitals in Iowa and counties sharing a border with Iowa. You do not have access to care outside of these areas unless you have an emergency while out of state or need care which is not available in the state of Iowa.
National Choice
National Choice is a PPO and uses Wellmark’s Alliance Select's network. With National Choice, you have access to doctors and hospitals in Iowa, plus nationwide coverage to see any provider you want.
Group Program F
Benefit design identical to a individual Medicare Supplement Plan F
Group Program N
Benefit design identical to a individual Medicare Supplement Plan N
Alliance Select (SPOC Covered employee only)
Alliance Select offers access to a large selection of doctors and hospitals in Iowa and nationwide. You may seek health care from any provider located in the United States.
Delta Dental
You can continue to participate in the State of Iowa’s group dental plans when you retire. If your spouse is covered by our group insurance at the time of your death, he or she can continue dental coverage as a surviving spouse. If you drop State of Iowa dental coverage, there is no provision for rejoining the group at a later date. The same dental plan provisions that govern active employees’ coverage also apply to retirees’ coverage.
The cost of retiree dental coverage is the total cost of the insurance. Dental premiums are either single or family. Dental coverage for you and your spouse is considered family coverage. Dental premiums are not reduced when you become eligible for Medicare.
A new dental plan feature has been added for 2025. Check-Up Plus will promote preventive care and save on costs over the long term, with diagnostic and preventive services not counting toward your annual benefit maximum. This program is provided at no additional cost to you and is automatically provided as part of your dental coverage.
Vision Care Discount Program
In addition to dental benefits, your dental insurance also includes access to a vision discount program through EyeMed Vision Care at no additional cost. You and your family members who are enrolled in Delta Dental of Iowa are eligible to receive the discounts.
Using Your EyeMed Discount Program
You can locate an EyeMed provider by calling 866-246-9041 or go to Delta Dental’s Find a Provider site DeltaVision Providers.
