Definition
Enforces the Iowa Crop Pest Act and the Agricultural Seeds Act, directs the professional scientific work of entomologists; performs related work as required.
Work Examples
Supervises and evaluates the work of professional/support staff; effectively recommends personnel actions related to selection, performance, leaves of absence, grievances, work schedules and assignments, disciplinary procedures, and administers personnel and related policies and procedures.
Directs the inspections of nurseries, greenhouses, and other plant sale facilities for insects, plant diseases, nematodes, mites, and other harmful pests.
Directs the inspections of nursery materials and agricultural seeds to be exported from Iowa for harmful pests.
Conducts or directs the conduction of insect surveys and other research programs in cooperation with college extension services, federal agencies, and other agencies.
Prepares technical scientific reports concerning inspection, certification, research and consultation activities. Conducts workshops and makes presentations at seminars.
Competencies Required
Knowledge of entomology, biology, botany, plant pathology, and related sciences necessary to perform inspections and research required in the job.
Knowledge of methods of treatment for plant pest infestations.
Knowledge of field and laboratory techniques used to identify causes of damage to plants.
Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Iowa Crop Pest Act.
Knowledge of entomological research methods and techniques.
Ability to identify and properly classify insect and other pests that affect plant life.
Ability to use laboratory equipment and supplies.

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in entomology and five years experience in professional entomology work.
