Under immediate supervision, performs technical soil and water conservation practices and techniques in a training capacity; performs related work as required.
Work Examples
Conducts routine field surveys by measuring distances and elevations with a chain and rod and recording measurements; installs and removes survey stakes and clears terrain of obstacles.
Prepares survey sketches based on data collected and transposes tracings to charts and maps.
Collects and maintains field survey notes and related data in order to assist staff in the layout of conservation practices including terraces, contour lines, waterways, ponds, tile drainage, windbreaks, strip cropping and crop rotations.
Learns to apply and interpret standards and specifications for determining the layout of conservation practices.
Meets with landowners on installing and maintaining basic types of soil and water conservation practices and systems within the Soil and Water Conservation District.
Compiles planning data from standard sources in order to assist in the development of conservation plans.
Competencies Required
Knowledge of mathematics (including algebra and plane geometry) as applied to the survey, design and layout of conservation plans.
Knowledge of elementary engineering survey techniques as applied to the survey, design and layout of conservation practices.
Knowledge of simple conservation practices and systems including terraces, contour lines and windbreaks.
Ability to learn and apply policies, procedures, and eligibility standards associated with district soil and water conservation programs.
Ability to learn engineering survey techniques as applied to the design and layout of conservation practices.
Ability to use and maintain a variety of field surveying equipment.
Ability to interpret soil data, standards and specifications for use in laying out conservation measures.
Ability to work out of doors under all types of weather conditions.
