Work Examples

  • Analyzes financial records and transaction data to identify discrepancies and ensure accuracy of accounts.

  • Reconciles accounts, ledgers, and financial reports by investigating variances and resolving inconsistencies.

  • Reviews and validates accounting transactions processed by Accounting Support Technicians for accuracy and compliance.

  • Resolves escalated issues involving atypical transactions, coding errors, or system-generated discrepancies.

  • Applies accounting standards and organizational policies to ensure proper classification and reporting of financial activity.

  • Prepares financial reports, summaries, and supporting documentation for internal and external use.

  • Monitors assigned accounting processes (e.g., accounts payable, receivable, payroll, or grants) to ensure timely and accurate processing.

  • Communicates with program staff, vendors, or other stakeholders to clarify financial information and resolve issues.

  • Assists with audits by compiling documentation, responding to inquiries, and explaining accounting processes.

  • Identifies recurring issues and recommends process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

  • Maintains and oversees the maintenance of general or subsidiary ledgers involving a portion of an agency's fiscal activities.

  • Maintains, controls, and oversees the performance of balancing operations for a portion of an agency's accounting system.

  • Prepares and/or oversees the preparation of fiscal statements and reports.

  • Prepares analysis of expenditures and monthly report of operations, quarterly request for allotments, financial statements, schedules, and statistical data.

  • Economics and Accounting – Economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.

  • English Language – The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: 

  1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, business administration, or finance.

  2. Four years of full-time work experience in accounting, accounts examination or verification, budgeting, or closely-related fiscal work.

  3. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number two), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in accounting, business administration, or finance field equals one year of full-time experience.

  4. Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate.

  5. Employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes thirty months of full-time experience as an Accounting Support Technician 1 or six months of full-time experience as an Accounting Support Technician 2.
