Prepares detailed weather summaries and statistical data; may serve on boards or panels and as an expert witness in legal proceedings; performs related work as required.

Work Examples

  • Prepares Iowa climate analyses and assessments.

  • Prepares weather summaries and climatological data for inclusion in reports and news articles.

  • Cooperates with National Weather Service and other climatologists to provide national and local data.

  • Prepares special climatic summaries of significant weather events.

  • Serves on special boards and panels dealing with adverse weather conditions.

  • Prepares press releases or materials for press releases concerning noteworthy weather events.

  • Prepares climate analyses.

Competencies Required

  • Knowledge of weather patterns.

  • Ability to predict future weather based on the past patterns.

  • Ability to read radar screens and apply that information to forecast weather.

  • Ability to comprehend statistical data.

  • Ability to assemble data in a useful and easily understood format.

  • Displays high standards of ethical conduct.  Exhibits honesty and integrity.  Refrains from theft-related, dishonest and unethical behavior.

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in natural sciences or a weather related area and experience equal to four years of full-time work in a weather related field.
