Definition

Performs basic para-professional nursing or therapeutic work in the care or treatment of residents at a state institution for the elderly, intellectually disabled, or mentally ill; performs related work as required.

Work Examples

  • Provides care and treatment of residents by implementing therapeutic programs designed by treatment team staff.

  • Assists or trains residents to perform basic skills such as dressing, feeding, and bathing.

  • Administers medications to residents as prescribed by a doctor.

  • Provides advice, psychological support, and direction to residents in order to facilitate the treatment program.

  • Performs basic clinical tests such as taking temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.

  • Records information relating to a resident's treatment program, such as medicines received or significant changes in behavior or attitude, on medical charts and treatment records.

  • Escorts residents to activities, dining hall, medical appointments, therapy sessions, recreation, school or other areas, in order to facilitate all aspects of the resident's overall treatment program.

  • Attends basic in-service training classes in order to learn skills needed to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.

  • Attends treatment team meetings in order to provide information relative to a resident's behavior or response to the treatment program.

  • Performs housekeeping tasks in order to maintain the cleanliness of the ward or living unit.

Competencies Required

  • Knowledge of the problems, attitudes, and needs of residents in an institutional setting.

  • Knowledge of patient care and basic nursing procedures (e.g., basic first aid; taking temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; administering hot or cold compresses, etc.).

  • Knowledge of medications and of their use and administration.

  • Knowledge of basic principles of personal hygiene and their application to personal care of institutional residents.

  • Knowledge of equipment and materials used in providing basic nursing/patient care.

  • Knowledge of methods and procedures used to maintain medical or treatment records.

  • Knowledge of body mechanics utilized in lifting, moving, dressing, giving simple treatments, or carrying out personal hygiene procedures.

  • Knowledge of housekeeping procedures used on a ward or living unit.

  • Ability to read and write the English language.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with institutional residents and to deal with each resident empathetically and tactfully.

  • Ability to administer prescribed medications.

  • Ability to maintain medical charts and treatment records.

  • Ability to apply patient care procedures and basic nursing practices including the administration of basic first aid; taking temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure; and administering hot or cold compresses.
  • Displays high standards of ethical conduct.  Refrains from dishonest behavior.
  • Works and communicates with all clients and customers providing professional service.
  • Displays a high level of initiative, effort, attention to detail and commitment by completing assignments efficiently with minimal supervision.
