Definition
Performs technical work in conducting and processing radiographs and electrocardiographs; performs related work as required.
Work Examples
Performs routine and non-involved radiographic examinations.
Positions patients and adjusts the radiographic equipment for prescribed film appearance; selects and adjusts immobilization devices and other accessories; selects proper size of film and inserts film identification markers.
Uses calipers and determines proper X-ray voltage characteristics by setting the appropriate voltage circuits.
Prepares and administers barium or other solutions and may assist a physician in the preparation and injection of intravenous substances.
Assists radiologist in fluoroscopic examinations by preparing and positioning patients, adjusting controls and administering contrast materials and producing films.
Utilizes and operates mobile X-ray equipment for bedside examinations.
Prepares X-ray development solutions from chemicals in accordance with prescribed standards.
Performs darkroom maintenance and reports need for equipment repairs as required.
Maintains necessary files and records of diagnostic examinations performed.
Conducts electrocardiographic examinations as requested.
Competencies Required
Knowledge of the operation and storage of X-ray equipment and apparatus.
Knowledge of photographic principles including exposures, processing of surface and visceral anatomy.
Knowledge of radiation safety procedures and measures.
Knowledge of elementary physics and electricity.
Knowledge of medical terminology as related to radiological work.

Knowledge of the recent literature and developments in radiological techniques.

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements
Possession of a current certificate to practice diagnostic radiography as issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health which indicates fulfillment of the training requirements for a "general diagnostic radiographer."
