Definition
Under immediate supervision and on a seasonal basis, examines and reports on honeybee colonies in order to identify contagious or infectious diseases common to bees; performs related work as required.

Work Examples
Examines bee colonies within an assigned area of the state for various brood and adult bee diseases, and checks for parasites, vermin, or other disease agents by personally handling the colonies utilizing proper protective measures.
Reviews the methods and procedures used by beekeepers which affect the production of honey in order to ensure compliance with related laws, rules, and regulations.
Assists or instructs beekeepers in treatment or disease control measures.
Examines all appliances used in the production of honey ensuring that their use complies with applicable health and safety regulations.
Prepares reports indicating the colony inspected, results of inspection, and action(s) recommended or taken.

- Food Production – Techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food products (both plant and animal) for consumption, including storage/handling techniques.

Monitoring – Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
Two years of full-time work experience in the keeping of bees, production of honey, or enforcement of apiary regulations.
A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where fifteen semester hours of accredited college or university course work in entomology, biology, zoology, or bacteriology equals one year of full-time experience.

Travel may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
