​WHO: The Department of Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars. WHAT: Will facilitate a Prisoner of War Missing In Action (POW MIA). Recognition Day Ceremony / Observance WHEN: Friday, September 20, 2019 at 4:00 pm. WHERE: Vietnam Memorial on the Iowa State Capitol Grounds in Des Moines. WHY: The Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Iowa wants to hold a ceremony on the official "POW MIA Recognition Day” in order to remember and honor these Americans and ensure that their sacrifices are not forgotten. TIMELINE: 2:00 pm - Organizers arrive and set up (podium & microphone system from VFW Department Headquarters, Flags (American, State of Iowa, POW MIA, Department of Iowa VFW) from Department Headquarters; 3:30 pm - Anticipated arrival of other VFW Leadership Team for pre-event coordination. 3:45 pm – Public assembles, sets up chairs, etc. 6:30 pm – Speech by Department of Iowa Commander, Russ “Doc” Saffell 4:30 pm – Ceremony Complete. 6:00 pm – Memorial Area will be cleared of all debris and returned to original condition.
