Attention Mail Handling Personnel - Watch for Suspicious Mail

To identify suspicious mail, look for:

  • Excessive postage and/or stamps in lieu of a meter strip
  • Misspelling common words
  • Oily stains, discolorations, or odor
  • No return address
  • Excessive weight
  • Protruding wires or aluminum foil
  • Excessive security materials (e.g. masking tape, string)
  • Ticking sound
  • Marked with restrictive endorsements like "Personal" or "Confidential"
  • Postmark city/state does not match return address

If you have a suspicious piece of mail, follow these directions:

Call BOTH these 24-hour numbers:

  1. State Patrol, Post 16 at 281-5608 (for mail received on the Capitol Complex) OR Postal Inspector at 1-877-876-2455 (for mail received off the Capitol Complex), and
  2. Department of Administrative Services Customer Service at 242-5120

If suspicious mail is open and/or a threat is identified:

  • HANDLE THE PACKAGE WITH CARE! - Do not shake or empty the contents.
  • Leave the package "as is"
  • Leave the room and close the door.
  • Wash hands, arms, and other exposed surfaces with soap and water.
  • Notify your supervisor immediately.
  • Keep all people that were present in the room or area when the letter or package was recognized together and obtain a list of those people.
