Capitol Complex Changes

In recent years the Capitol Complex has undergone a number of changes. The information below highlights a few of the bigger projects that have been completed. For an overview of the Capitol Complex, view the map.

New IUB/OCA Building

An energy-efficient building – designed to be a model for other businesses – was built on the southeast corner of the Capitol Complex for the Iowa Utilities Board and the Office of Consumer Advocate (IUB/OCA). The building opened in January 2011.

West Capitol Terrace project

Parking lots west of the State Capitol were removed during the summer of 2006 to make way for a people's park - the West Capitol Terrace - with pedestrian paths, gathering spaces, benches, and native trees and flowers.

Oran Pape Building

The old Records and Properties building at the corner of East 7th Street and Court Avenue was renovated and remodeled to become the new home of the Department of Public Safety. The building celebrated its grand opening on June 8, 2007 and was named for Trooper Oran Pape in 2012.

"Looking Back, Looking Forward" video

This presentation was prepared for an October 2006 visioning and brainstorming session to provide a historical look at the Capitol Complex. The video is approximately 20 minutes long.
