Department of Administrative Services Releases Federal Government Shutdown Iowa Impact Information
Des Moines – Today, Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) and the Department of Public Defense (DPD) announced temporary layoffs as a result of the federal government shutdown. The temporary layoffs impact approximately 69 employees at IWD and 111 employees at DPD. The temporary layoffs will impact employee members of UE Local 893 Iowa United Professionals (UE/IUP), employee members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal (AFSCME) and non-contract employees.
Layoffs affecting non-contract employees and employees covered under the UE/IUP covered collective bargaining agreement are effective today, October 3, 2013. Layoffs affecting employees covered under the AFSCME contract are currently scheduled to be effective as of the close of business October 17, 2013.
The Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is partnering with AFSCME and UE/IUP in an effort to minimize the impact of this funding lapse on state employees. DAS will be meeting with leaders of AFSCME and UE/IUP in the near future to continue to discuss ways to avoid a permanent reduction in force.
