Civil War Parrott Rifle (44)

Civil War Parrott Rifle

This muzzle-loading cannon was cast at West Point Foundry in New York. During the Civil War this 10,000-pound Parrott rifle, No. 271, was part of the armament of the USS Tallapoosa.  The USS Tallapoosa was a wooden-hulled, double-ended steamer in the US Navy during the American Civil War, 1861-1865.  This “Civil War Parrott Rifle” was named after its inventor and American soldier Robert Parker Parrott (1804-1877), a West Point graduate.
