State employees set Toys for Tots record
Giving increases at time of heightened economic need across Iowa

DES MOINES — In this season of giving, one group of workers has elevated the holiday spirit to new levels. Employees with the State of Iowa, through a variety of food sales and special events coordinated by a volunteer group led by Kim Aubin of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services, exceeded the total given to Toys for Tots last year by over $10,000.

"During this time of economic uncertainty here at home and continued conflict abroad, it is important to remember the traditions that make this time of year so special," said Governor Culver. "The most important tradition of all is the spirit of giving, and the First Lady and I want to thank all of the State employees whose generosity will make a difference to so many families this holiday season."

In 2007, employees with the state donated 3,868 toys and $36,228.32 in cash to the popular program. This year, perhaps because they sensed an increasing need in their communities, the same people donated 3,597 toys and $46,315.93, an increase of more than 27% in cash donations.

"I am so proud that our State employees, whose work means so much to Iowa throughout the year, participated in Toys for Tots at a record level during a time when Iowans are faced with economic concerns," added Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge.

Governor Culver and his family kicked off the Toys for Tots drive at the annual Holiday Tree lighting at the State Capitol on December 4.

Overall, 82 State of Iowa employees volunteered to coordinate fundraising and distribute toy donation boxes throughout the Capitol Complex. Giving to Toys for Tots is a longstanding tradition for State of Iowa employees along with annual donation drives to Food Bank of Central Iowa.
