Lucas State Office Building Closed

DES MOINES — The Lucas State Office Building was closed early this morning due to wastewater entering the building through the basement. Recent heavy rains are the suspected cause. State and city officials are on site assessing the damage and beginning clean-up work. The building is not safe to occupy at this time. Employees and visitors have been redirected to the State Capitol.
The Lucas Building houses approximately 800 employees from the departments of inspections and appeals, public health, human rights, management, the Iowa Communications Network, and offices of the attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and auditor. The building also houses a cafeteria operated by the Department for the Blind.

The building will remain closed until it is determined to be safe for occupants. Early estimates say that it could take four to eight hours to completely clean and disinfect damaged areas.

The Department of Administrative Services will continue to provide updates throughout the day.
