Capitol Complex Development
The Capitol Complex is undergoing one of its most active periods of growth, building and development in decades. Check back often to learn the latest about the various projects currently underway.
Capital Projects Presentation - This PowerPoint presentation was delivered to the Legislative Council's Capital Projects Committee on June 13, 2007, by Director Mollie Anderson. It highlights the many projects just completed and currently underway on the Capitol Complex, as well as many of the "big ideas" floating around about the future of the campus! (Please note: this is a large Microsoft PowerPoint file - 29.4 MB.)
West Capitol Terrace project - Parking lots west of the State Capitol were removed during the summer of 2006 to make way for a people's park - the West Capitol Terrace - with pedestrian paths, gathering spaces, benches, a fountain, and native trees and flowers.
New Department of Public Safety Building - The old Records and Properties building at the corner of East 7th Street and Court Avenue has been renovated and remodeled to become the new home of the Department of Public Safety. The building celebrated its grand opening on June 8, 2007.
New State Office Buildings - During the 2006 Legislative Session, funds were appropriated to build two new state office buildings on the Complex. One will replace the Wallace Building and the other will house the Iowa Utilities Board and the Office of the Consumer Advocate in a model 'green' facility.
Envisioning the Future of the Capitol Complex - How will we continue to integrate the Capitol Complex into the community and Des Moines as a whole? What is the future of the Carriage House, the row houses, and other buildings on the Complex? What about developing a Capitol Complex Visitors' Center? There's a lot to consider for the future of the Complex, and a group of stakeholders has assembled to sketch out a path.
