A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment. It relates to the amount of carbon emissions, or greenhouse gases, produced in our day-to-day lives through the burning of fossil fuels and typically has units of tons (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent. The State of Iowa is working to reduce the fossil fuels used by state government, reducing its carbon dioxide emissions. The tables below shows the main elements that make up a typical person’s carbon footprint, both through direct and indirect actions.
